Paul Julian Smith, a Fellow of the British Academy, earned his doctorate and taught Spanish at the University of Cambridge before becoming a Distinguished Professor at the Graduate Center in the City University of New York in 2010.  He is based in the Comparative Literature Program.   He has been Visiting Professor in 10 universities including Stanford, NYU, and Carlos III, Madrid; and has presented over 300 invited lectures and conference papers around the world. He is the author of 23 scholarly books (translated into Spanish, Chinese, and Turkish) and over 100 academic articles in prestigious journals and edited volumes. Dr.Smith is also a regular contributor to Sight & Sound, the monthly journal of the British Film Institute, and was for ten years a columnist for Film Quarterly, published by the University of California Press.
