Moderated by Maura McCreight (Ph.D. Candidate, Art History, CUNY Graduate Center) and Nicole Beth Wallenbrock, Ph.D., CUNY, author of The Franco-Algerian War through a 21st Century Lens (Bloomsbury, 2020). Mila Turajlić is a documentary filmmaker born in Belgrade,Yugoslavia. Her 2022 documentary, Scenes from the LabudovićReels: Non-Aligned and Ciné-Guerrillas, premiered at the TorontoIFF and IDFA. She earned her Ph.D. in film from WestminsterUniversity and her MSc and BSc in Politics and InternationalRelations from the London School of Economics.
Elaine Mokhtefi is an American activist, translator, writer, and artist. She supported Algerian independence efforts from New York City, and lived in Algeria from 1962 until she was forced to leave the country in 1974. Her memoir Algiers, Third World Capital: Freedom Fighters, Revolutionaries, and Black Panthers )verso, 2018) shares stories of her friendship with Frantz Fanon, her role in organizing the iconic 1969 Panaf festival, and her work with the Black Panther Party’s International Section in Algiers.
