May 11 | OpenCUNY Prospective: Reflecting on the Past, Imagining the Future

On May 11th, OpenCUNY will be hosting our spring event, OpenCUNY Prospective: Reflecting on the Past, Imagining the Future.

At this event we will lead a lively discussion about OpenCUNY’s role in the dynamic digital ecology that has developed at CUNY in the last decade. When OpenCUNY began in 2008, it was the only WordPress installation serving GC students. Now, with the CUNY Academic Commons and other, campus-based WordPress installations like Blogs@BaruchQWritingOpenLab, and others, GC and CUNY students have various options for building websites and developing a digital presence.

As the Coordinators for OpenCUNY, this leads us to ask: what is OpenCUNY’s role serving future GC students? What type of digital spaces and opportunities will GC students need? If not WordPress (or, in addition to), what other open source options could we offer?

We hope that we can pick up where we left off after our fall event when Dr. Scott Dexter (Professor of Computer and Information Science,The Graduate Center and Brooklyn College) and Dr. Steve Brier (Professor of Urban Education and Director of the ITP Program) lead a fascinating conversation that explored the meaning of “free” and “open” at the intersection of CUNY history and software development. At this event, we hope that you will reflect with us on the digital ecology that has developed at CUNY and discuss possibilities for how OpenCUNY might evolve to serve GC students in the future.
