Adjunct opening at Ramapo College


Ramapo College in Mahwah, NJ is looking for an adjunct instructor to teach Media and Cinema Studies in spring 2019 as part of our accelerated adult evening program.

This course will run Jan. 24 – March 14, 2019. It is a hybrid course, with 50% of content taught on campus on either Monday or Thursday evenings from 6:05-9:35 pm, and the remaining 50% of content delivered through asynchronous online activities. Stipend is $5600.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

COMM 216 Media & Cinema Studies: Contemporary culture is dominated by film, television, video, and related media that convey information, provide entertainment, and influence both belief and action. Media/Cinema Studies is an introduction to the discipline of media and cinema studies and their influence. The course will introduce students to the critical terms and methods required for reading and writing about these media and related cultural texts, with an emphasis on developing skills in the close reading of such texts and the writing of critical responses to them. Media/Cinema Studies is intended as a foundation for further courses in the Communication Arts major while also serving as a general interest course to students in other programs. The course deals with Hollywood movies past and present; international cinema and media; television; video; and emerging forms of new media. This course will examine images as well as the institutions that produce them in order to show why and how the production and consumption of media have become a defining characteristic of contemporary culture.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Gain familiarity with vocabulary of media/cinema language, including the principles of media representation and ways in which media constructs social reality
  • Understand media as part of economic, political, and cultural life.
  • Develop critical insights into the impact of changes, developments, and evolution of media and cinema.
  • Understand the ideological effects and influential power of films and media on the public, i.e., their potential to either reinforce or challenge dominant ideologies.
  • Demonstrate ability to research, write, and think critically about media, with good form.
  • Become a self-directed learner, by honing the skills needed to formulate and execute future areas of inquiry in the field after the course ends.
